National Strategies for People with a Learning Disability

National Strategies for People with a Learning Disability; what is required to improve oral health and dental services?
Senior Research Fellow in Dental Public Health, University of Bristol Dental School
People with a Learning Disability (PwaLD) are less able than others to make informed decisions about lifestyle and be able to act on those decisions. As a result the oral health of PwaLD is largely dependent on the wide variety of care ser vices and support available to them in the environments in which they live. How can these environments and the various care cultures be influenced and strengthened to promote oral health and ensure timely access to quality dental treatment services when they are needed? This is one of the key challenges faced by the dental profession today where the focus of the NHS and Government policy is increasingly toward reducing inequalities and increasing inclusivity. The year 2000 is a year of great opportunities to develop strategy and shape future dental services for PwaLD. These opportunities are happening at local, regional and national levels, both within the dental sector and also within and between other sectors including health, education and social services. Stimulated in part by the key document Signposts for Success, at local levels many health authorities are workingup strategies for PwaLD and in many cases working jointly with social services. At regional level, London has recently developed a joint strategy between health, education and social services for the delivery of integrated services.
