Saudi dental students’ perception of their education in Special Care Dentistry and its effect on their confidence to render care

Abstract Aims and Objectives: The study aimed to assess the views of final year students studying in four established schools in different provinces of Saudi Arabia to evaluate their perception of the adequacy of their education in special care dentistry, and assess the impact this had on their willingness and confidence to render effective dental care to patients with special health care needs (SHCN). Methodology: 222 students from four dental schools in Saudi Arabia responded to a structured questionnaire to rank their perceived levels of willingness and confidence to treat the most commonly encountered special health care needs in Saudi Arabia. Results: The results of this study suggest that although Saudi Dental students are willing to treat most patients with SHCN but they lack the confidence to do so. Gender differences existed in the willingness to treat patients with certain disorders but there was an overall lack of confidence to render care to individuals with SHCN. Conclusion: Saudi students lack the confidence to render care to individuals with SHCN even though they are willing to treat these patients.
