Editorial: Special Care Dentistry – a specialty or a need for more caring dentists?

A recent editorial in Special Care Dentistry reopened in my mind the debate around the case for a specialty in Special Care Dentistry (SCD). This is currently a hot issue on the other side of the Atlantic, where there is now a greater awareness of patients with special care dental needs, but still no recognised specialty in SCD. Ackerman (2013) argues in his editorial that while some dental colleagues make the case for a specialty in SCD, there is an associated danger that this could actually reduce access to dental care for people with special needs because those in general dental practice will then ‘leave it ‘ to specialist colleagues. Ackerman suggests that the solution to the problem is to continue to mainstream patients and ensure that people with special needs can be seen routinely in conventional dental practices.
