Editorial
Worldwide special care

As the past president of Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA) in the United States, and an IADH council member since 2008, it is my pleasure to be invited to write this editorial. In reflecting on these experiences and my time spent attending IADH conferences, I realise that while the practice of special care is different around the world, we are all much more the same than we are different. In fact, recent reports state that the genetic difference between individual humans today is approximately 0.1%. http://humanorigins.si.edu/ evidence/genetics (Accessed on Nov. 23, 2014). I think maybe that members of IADH inherently always knew this as they strove to be the voice for those who didn’t have one, while always respecting the human dignity of those with disabilities. The passion of the members of the IADH to serve those with disabilities, teach the next generation and advocate for social change is inspiring. Meeting new friends and hearing about what is going on in different countries has made the IADH congress a ‘must attend’ event for me. In the past congress alone I learned about placing implants in patients with haemophilia from a doctor in Seville and about dealing with the aftermath of wrong tooth extraction from a doctor in England, all in the same hour and a half session! In our joint session with the oral surgeons, I had the honour of introducing doctors from Korea, Scotland and Germany all who reported on amazing cases and cutting edge research from their respective lands. Perhaps the most enjoyable part of attending the congress is all the great networking and informal conversations that occur. Catching up with old friends and meeting new ones.
