Abstract
Aims and objectives: To describe the oral health and dental care for a group of children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD and use the ï¬ndings to improve dental care for this group. Design: Patients with ADHD, referred to the Gothenburg Child Neuropsychiatric Clinic, were invited to participate in the study. Thirty-one individuals responded and underwent a clinical examination and their parents completed a questionnaire and took part in an interview. Retrospective data were obtained from dental records comprising caries history, cancelled/missed appointments, dental trauma, dental behaviour management problems, number of attendances for preventive and operative dental treatments including treatments carried out without evidence in the notes, of use of local anaesthetics. Results: A high prevalence of caries was found in all ages. The calculated risk of developing caries showed that 100% of this group had or would develop caries by the age of 19 years. The dental records revealed that cancellations, behaviour management problems and treatment without use of local anaesthetics were common. Visual plaque was found in a majority of the individuals (17/31) despite numerous occasions for preventive treatment. Dental traumatic injuries (20/31) were spread over different ages and several subjects had experienced more than one. Conclusions: In conclusion, this group of children with ADHD exhibited a high number of cancellations and caries experience. It is suggested to use ‘less boring’ approaches when instructing or informing in oral hygiene/dietary habits.
