Abstract
Aim: To investigate and identify the barriers to dental care, both perceived and real, for patients with the congenital bleeding disorders of von Willebrand disease and haemophilia. Methodology: A convenience sample of 18 patients were invited to take part in this study and asked to fill in a structured questionnaire which included questions on perceived and real barriers to dental care. Results: Nine of the 18 patients described themselves as ‘regular attenders’ to the dentist. The ‘non regular attenders’ group expressed a greater concern that their dentist would not know enough about their medical condition to enable safe treatment. Most of this group expressed a preference to be treated by a specialist dentist in the hospital setting. Conclusions: Individuals with the congenital bleeding disorders of von Willebrand disease and haemophilia can experience barriers to receiving dental care. This needs to be explored further and recommendations for a ‘shared approach’ to dental care have been made.

Key words: Barriers to dental care, congenital bleeding disorders, von Willebrand disease, haemophilia
