Introduction of a Nomad Pro hand held dental x-ray unit for radiography in a special care setting
Abstract
Aims: This paper describes the introduction of the Nomad Pro hand held dental x-ray set (Nomad Pro, Aribex,
Orem, USA) to a Special Care Dental service for use in a domiciliary setting and the pre-implementation and postimplementation tests and checks that were carried out. Methodology: A medical physics examination of the doses from the Nomad Pro and a ï¬lm quality audit was carried out prior to clinical use. Following clinical introduction, a retrospective review was carried out on twenty patients who had radiographs taken using the Nomad Pro, a total of 34 radiographs, as part of the clinical management and treatment planning. Results: Quality ratings showed that ï¬fteen radiographs were grade 1, ï¬fteen grade 2 and four were grade 3. In all cases, radiographs made a signiï¬cant contribution to the patient diagnosis and clinical management. The Nomad Pro was compliant with the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 and Ionising Radiation (Medical exposure) Regulations 2000. Conclusion: Based on the results of dose measurements and pre and post-implementation quality assessment the Nomad Pro is a safe and useful device for dental radiography when appropriate, for housebound patients but we draw attention to the image quality ratings of the clinical images which do not meet the NRPB standards.
