Dental student evaluation of a special care dentistry outreach pilot
Background: Quality and content of undergraduate education in Special Care Dentistry (SCD) has been shown to
correlate with students’ confidence, and expressed willingness towards providing care for patients with additional
healthcare. Method: A SCD teaching programme was piloted for dental students attending an outreach placement in the
Salaried Community Dental Services in Derbyshire. The pilot was developed in line with recent guidance on the
Undergraduate Special Care Dentistry Curriculum. As key stake-holders, the dental students were asked to evaluate the value of the experience and their exposure to special care dentistry whilst on this placement. Results: Student self-reported confidence increased for some key domains of SCD after this outreach placement. Tutorials and clinical attachments were considered to be of most value. Conclusion: This method of teaching and evaluation fulfils curriculum guidance for work-place based learning and continued feedback from students.
