Formative assessment used to enhance knowledge, skills and student experience in undergraduate sedation teaching
Background: Formative assessment at the beginning and end of clinical placements may be useful in providing
feedback regarding knowledge acquisition. This study reports the use of formative assessments during a clinical
attachment in intravenous sedation (IVS). Method: Clinical knowledge and skills were assessed with the use of a written clinical knowledge test and OSCE in intravenous cannulation, at the beginning and end of a one week attachment; a feedback questionnaire was also completed. Results: Eighty-seven students sat the pre-attachment clinical knowledge test and OSCE. The post-attachment tests were completed by eighty-four students and the average scores significantly improved in both assessments. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that following an IVS clinical attachment knowledge and skills significantly improved.
