Editorial
The philosophy of evidence-based healthcare requires that
we reflect on and evaluate our practice, maintain our
knowledge and understanding of the science and theory
behind treatment approaches as well as balancing our
knowledge and experience with the views of our patients.
This creates a drive to improve our services which provides
the opportunity for what I referred to in my last editorial as,
“the endless creativity†of clinical practice. One
manifestation of this that I have noticed is the short cuts, tips
and techniques that clinicians develop in their everyday
practice, but which perhaps never formally receive the
rigorously designed, conducted and reported research that
would truly validate the technique. So, I am going to suggest
that we try to capture these what I shall call ‘Pearls of
wisdom’ and I encourage you to share any you might have
with the special care community through the pages of the
journal. In the spirit of this new endeavour and as an
example I would like to share with you two of my favourites.
