Editorial
Earlier this year a series of articles was published in The
Lancet outlining the importance of oral health, the nature of
oral health inequalities and making a call for action to
reduce the burden of oral disease through a range of
initiatives. It is hoped these will create a shift from a
primarily technology focussed treatment approach to a
clearer concentration on the prevention of oral disease (Peres
et al., 2019; Watt et al., 2019). These articles both represent
the culmination of a body of work which has gradually and
systematically characterised the nature of the problem, the
challenges of delivering oral health and the injustice of oral
health inequalities, and lay a foundation for action.
