High flow nasal oxygen: impact on anaesthetic service delivery in Special Care Dentistry
Abstract
Aims and Objectives: To highlight the potential benefits of High Flow Nasal Oxygen (HFNO2) in conjunction with intravenous sedation for dental treatment in special care patients. Special Care Dentistry (SCD) is an essential service for a vulnerable patient group but can prove challenging. Much consideration is given to the provision of sedation and anaesthesia required to facilitate dental treatment for these patients. General anaesthesia may be considered necessary in some patients but is not without risk. In SCD, sedation techniques may be limited due to challenging behaviours and compliance. HFNO2 has become a useful adjunct to anaesthetist led sedation within our service. This delivers warm, humidified oxygen through soft wide bore nasal prongs. The high flow gives continuous positive airway pressure, aids airway maintenance and assists ventilation allowing for deeper levels of sedation and improved patient compliance where previously sedation may have failed. This has resulted in an increased number of patients receiving treatment with intravenous sedation, improving access to care and
increasing the number of patients treated overall.
