The holistic care of the autistic child within the dental care environment
Abstract
Autism (also known as Autistic Spectrum Disorder, or ASD) is a lifelong developmental disorder. It is commonly characterised by impaired communication and socialisation, lack of social imagination, hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity to sensory stimuli, and repetitive and restrictive patterns or behaviour. In the UK, approximately 1.1% of the population may be autistic, and the prevalence of autism appears to be increasing globally. The dental treatment of children with autism can, without a doubt, be very difficult. By knowing more about autism itself, and by preparing appropriately, the dental visit can be a very positive experience for everybody involved.
