Oral self-injurious behaviour involving multiple auto-extractions in a patient with severe learning disability and autism: a management challenge during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic- a case report
Abstract:
Tooth loss (including through auto-extractions) can significantly impact on oral and general health, such as mastication, social acceptance and psychological wellbeing, as well as being associated with many chronic diseases. This case report details the management of a patient with a severe learning disability and autism and who presented with auto-extraction behaviour during the 2020 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. Multidisciplinary assessment and treatment, including restorative dental care, was provided despite the limitations on dental surgery and behaviour management during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and this resulted in the cessation of the auto-extraction behaviour.
