Content comparison of concepts of oral health reported in the literature with the International Classification of Functioning: a literature review
Abstract: Aims and objectives: Current concepts of oral health embrace a biopsychosocial perspective and acknowledge the influence of both individual characteristics, and of social and environmental factors in the shaping of health. This holistic approach can be described by using the WHO’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) which allows detailed description of factors influencing and influenced by health. The aim of the
study is to investigate what concepts pertaining to oral health are reported in the scientific literature and to compare this content with the ICF. The specific objectives are to review the literature to identify existing measures, indices, terms, descriptors and classifications of oral health, and to link the meaningful concepts within each article and measure to the ICF, using established linking procedures, thus establishing the frequency of citation of the
different ICF items in the oral health research literature.
