Let’s face it (and to quote Carl Jung) “Thinking is difficult”. When faced with any new task or problem the effort of working out what the essential and desirable characteristics of a solution can appear overwhelming. So rather than start afresh with every new challenge we use a variety of approaches to take short cuts to solutions – we base our plans on previous experience of success, our prior learning and what psychologists refer to as ‘heuristics’. These are
mental shortcuts that allow us to find solutions rapidly.
