General Symposia 1. Oral Health and Disability – a global perspective
Around the world an estimated 600 million people live with disabilities. This number is increasing as a result of population growth, ageing, chronic disease conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer; injuries at home, work, schools and on the roads; violence; birth defects; AIDS; environmental degradation; malnutrition and other causes often related to poverty. These trends are creating an overwhelming demand for health and rehabilitation services for people with disabilities. This is particularly the case in developing countries. As 80% of people with disabilities live in low-income countries, disabilities and poor health represent significant burden to countries and limitation to growth of society. Poor oral health and disabilities have major negative impact on quality of life of children, adults and older people and calls for global action for improved oral health and integrated chronic disease control. The 58th World Health Assembly Resolution on Disability, including prevention, management and rehabilitation, requests WHO to provide support to member states in strengthening the implementation of the United Nations Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. The World Programme of Action emphasizes the need to approach disability from a human rights perspective. WHO recently developed an action plan focussing on awareness-raising, medical care, rehabilitation, supply of support services, and training of personnel. The present intervention will discuss how United Nations and WHO recommendations for improved health apply to oral healthrelated disabilities globally.
