Editorial - Embracing change
After ten years at the helm, Professor June Nunn has stepped down as Editor of the Journal of Disability and Oral Health and Norman Campbell, OBE has retired as Editorial Assistant. June and Norman worked tirelessly over the last decade to take the journal from its initial vision and inception by Mike Prendergast to become the official publication of the British Society for Disability and Oral Health, the Irish Society for Disability and Oral Health and the International Association of Disability and Oral Health. Both June and Norman were officially congratulated for their achievements at the BSDH winter scientific meeting in London in 2010 and June has become Emeritus Editor of the Journal of Disability and Oral Health. June and Norman’s hard work enables me to take the Journal forward and strive to fulfil its aims of advancing knowledge and expertise in Special Care Dentistry. There have inevitably been some changes, a new Editorial Assistant- Sue Bryant, Business Manager- Selina Masters and to the Editorial Board, to reflect a growing global membership and the dental public health needs of people with disabilities. Previous editorials have stressed the need for high quality research in Special Care Dentistry to provide the evidence-base to inform best practice and care for our patients. With an increasingly better educated and specialised workforce in Special Care Dentistry throughout the world, it is important that we all take responsibility to audit, evaluate services and facilitate research within the populations we serve. Many good examples of research and practice in Special Care Dentistry were evident at the IADH Congress in Ghent last summer; it is hoped that authors of published abstracts and those presenting papers related to Special Care Dentistry at scientific meetings will consider publishing their projects in our peer-reviewed journal. The Journal has a role to support publication of scientific articles from across the world which led to its recognition of being the official publication for the International Association of Disability and Oral Health. In many countries, Special Care Dentistry ranges from ‘cradle to grave’ services whilst, in others it is an adult specialty; regardless of this, the emphasis and need for research to promote holistic oral healthcare across the transition of age remains paramount. This issue of the Journal includes a novel approach used to develop and improve the oral health of older people in care homes through achievement of a Care Award. Provision of oral health care for patients with oncological disease; however, showed considerable variation in dental service provision, funding and lack of a distinct care pathway. By sharing and dissemination of knowledge, the Journal and its readers can rise to the challenge of playing a part in the process of change towards a brighter future for people with special care needs.
