BSDH News Pages - A memorable elective

Distant lands are not the only places where exotic electives can be found. East London was this millennium summer’s destination for a fourth year dental student from Newcastle Dental School. From the fog on the Tyne via falafels in Fa r r i n g d o n , the final destination was found: Tower Hamlets Healthcare NHS Trust (THHT). Mission: A four week community dentistry elective Following a warm welcome from the boss, Ursula Bennett, Head of Services, I was introduced to her staff. Dental Officer (DO) Denise exposed me to children’s dentistry in Spitalfields. Her nurse was invaluable in translating various languages of the Indian sub-continent between Denise, patients and parents. I also observed restorative work without local anaesthetic which was new to me but popular with a number of these children for reasons of greater control over, and participation in, their treatment. Back at headquarters, Senior Dental Officer (SDO) Rob’s remit included sedation as well as dental treatment for adults with HIV. His passion for giving all his patients ‘the very best’ brought them from far afield. I was taken aback at how young adults with excellent oral hygiene could still be ravaged by ANUG due to HIV. SDO Rachel took me out on domiciliary visits. The amount of luggage was enough to dislocate a shoulder. A m o n g the Bethnal Green patients for a new set of dentures was a distant aunt of the Krays (there must be hundreds). She told me that she kept her boyfriend under the bed. I did not ask her if he was in one piece or many. She was joking, but also very convincing.
