Adults with Learning Difficulties in England 2003/4
The first national survey of Adults with Learning Difficulties has been carried out in England by research company BMRB, commissioned by the Department of Health. The survey was conducted in a partnership/consortium arrangement including Central England People First and the Institute for Health Research at Lancaster University. Fieldwork for the survey was completed in October 2004 and a main report on the findings was published on 28 September 2005. Reference number ISBN: 1-84636013-7 (main report); 1-84636022-6 (summary). The term learning difficulties was used rather than learning disabilities because these are the words that the people themselves said they prefer. The aims of the survey were to establish information from people with learning difficulties themselves. This encompassed what their whole lives are like including where they live and with whom, what they do during the day, what their needs, wants and aspirations are. In addition, the survey aimed to get people with learning difficulties to describe their current use of services, as well as their views on the services, to help establish possible gaps between what is currently provided and what they would like.
